Listen to THAT bass in Cobwebs! I've never really heard the space-bass, but this sounds so cool ...
Cobwebs seems to be a good opener. And the song grows totally for me. At first the song couldn't keep up with the other debuts like Like Yesterday or Fix It, in my (in this case) not humble opinion ;) , but it just works.
And something I appreciate so much; we just know where the songs come from because he posted a lot about his personal life on his blog and we know a lot about his personal life (way more than we should know) through the gossip sites.
I mean, when he sings "Sunlight falls on your hands / As you type, just something in my head" (Sinking Ships), then we know that this gotta be Jessica Joffe because she's a writer, columnist or whatever and they broke up last December.
Or when he sings about pausing on 5th avenue in Cobwebs, then we can assume that this is something that he really wrote himself and not with the help from the Cardinals because we were there in some fashion when he was walking around NYC (for example the video about the walk to and the flea market itself).
But on the other side; Magick just seems to be a fun, rocking song written by the whole band, I guess ...
I think we can be happy about that privilege, about the privilege to know where the songs come from because therefore we can perhaps relate to them even more and ... if I think of Bob Dylan or Springsteen, they are extremely good songwriters and I love them, but we can just assume what the songs meant to them, Dylan is the biggest mystery in music history and he would never explain a song. Ryan wrote quite a few full explanations at the RAA as he posted there under the name WereWolf.
I am thankful for that and I am thankful that I can write about these things here.
Have a nice weekend everybody.
