So for anyone who has em, how do you feel?

I'd say "Where the Wild Wind Blows" is the winner, and have no idea how it didnt make it to Easy Tiger. Imagine what Ryan's recorded we will never hear.

Also, doesnt anyone get a strong Whiskeytown vibe from some of these tracks. Very rustic and laid-back vibe. A definte lack of sheen, very unlike Easy Tiger or Cardinology.

Does anyone have artwork made for it yet?

Lighthouses is my favorite. Followed by Maps, Sewers and then Wild Wind.

I like it a lot, it's so great.

Does he really sing "Wish I could bring you back diamonds or sandwiches" in When The Wild Thing Blows? The randomness of that makes me smile everytime. I could be misshearing it though.

I really, really like it. It's basically everything I was hoping for ET to be. Now, most of ET has grown on me, and I like it, but these songs are just amazing. Lighthouses is heartbreaking, the alt. version of Two so much better and I love When The Wild Wind Blows.

Momo, did you get a copy yet?

I agree, the version of Two is infinitely better on Elizabethtown. I also love the alternative version of Elizabeth, You Were Born To Play That Part, which was already one of my favourite Ryan songs anyway.

The sessions are delicious. Lighthouses is really affecting. Love love love.

If you are interested in obtaining said tracks, put in a request in the song request thread...someone there will hook you up with a working link.

The version of Two just melts my heart everytime I hear it.

oh yeah, Two, which I really liked anyway, is amazing on this

It's a lot grittier on the Etowns - it's already a great song but I think this version trumps the Easy Tiger one.

maybe Cardinals mean "commercial" to him, an attempt to make a mainstream record and start bringing in some money. Maybe that's why he's towned down the grittier aspects of the Etown versions, and (with Two) boosted it with a celeb cameo.

Also maybe that's why some people resent The Cardinals so much

Well, Darkbreaker WAS with the Cardinals. The difference is Neal Casal. He wasnt on these sessions, and I think most people assume his influence brings Ryan into that Triple-A radio groove some of his songs have had lately.

oh right, I didn't know Darkbreaker was available

Okay, this is NOT the thread to request the Elizabethtown Sessions. This is for discussion of the tracks, etc. If you would like the tracks please PM somebody who has them, or post a request in the Song Requests forum. Thank you.

And for those not in the know, sometime last week a member of the alt-country.org message board leaked the Elizabethtown tracks. Which is the session which would have made up Ryans album "Darkbreaker". He recorded several albums in 2006, none of which were released. They ARE out there, though, so we may hear the rest, soon.

I certainly hope we do.

Some of his best stuff is unreleased.

wasnt this when catharine popper was still in the band? ever since she quit the cards have gotten a little too poppy for me. i mean, its better than other pop sounding coutry/rock whatever but i kinda miss the risks which were taken on the early cards records that frankly just arent there anymore since neal and spacewolf joined the band.

but anyways, this is what i was hoping for out of the last two records. and im sure im not alone in my thinking. e-sessions are pretty stellar.

In terms of 'people', I prefer the new lineup - and Ryan seems better off working with Neal, Spacewolf and Graboff. I think they harmonize well and the live shows (at least both that I've seen) are amazing.

But I have to agree, dude - the grit and risks and sweeping country songs of Cold Roses and JCN beat Easy Tiger and Cardinology by miles, despite that all four albums are still really good.

I agree. Ryan seems to be able to center himself much more with the friendships with Neal, Chris, Brad, Jon, etc...and I guess technically, the Cards ARE better these days. But their studio output is so professional it tends to lose something. Similar to Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky" it veers towards Dad-rock. And while Ryan IS getting older, his music isnt that of a 33 year old, its more like that of a 45 year old. Maybe thats just due to his long career and prodigy-like talents, but...um...i forgot my point...

momo_adachi

On the contrary, Sky Blue Sky might be my favourite Wilco CD - haha! But it's true - I liked Ryan's immaturity - I could relate to it more and it sounded better.

the rough edges went off when Easy Tiger kicked in.
i get tired of the songs more easy nowadays

The albums seem to have more instant impact these days, but the novelty seems to wear off very quickly, which is why it's good that it's pretty easy to find alt. versions of pretty much anything... I think I've always appreciated his unreleased stuff a little more anyway.

I do feel like he's laking a little lyrically at the moment too... but that might just be me.

Hoover
27-11-2008, 07:14 PM
this might sound weird, but maybe he's doing too good..
maybe he writes better songs when his mind is in the gutter.

I've always thought that, it's not something thats right to say out loud though : )

Of course I appreciate people being happy and keeping their life on track etc, but I do miss the heart-wrenching sadness.
